A few of these figures are easy to misread, so here is what each one actually tells you.
- The AQHI is a health scale, not a pollution reading. It runs from 1 to 10 and above, weighted toward the pollutants that affect health, so the same number means roughly the same risk in every Canadian city. Above 7, reduce strenuous activity outdoors.
- Daylight is not the same as sunshine. The figure above is the time between sunrise and sunset. Cloud cover is separate — Ottawa can have a long day and a grey one.
- “Feels like” is wind chill or humidex. Environment Canada publishes wind chill in the cold half of the year and humidex in the warm half; you will only ever see one of them at a time.
- Air quality is measured at one station. Ours is Ottawa. Local conditions a few kilometres away can differ.
